Affordable Connectivity Program: Library Edition
Friday, March 11 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Description: Please join us for the third webinar from the State Library and the California Emerging Technology Fund highlighting the New Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). This is the successor to the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program.
Executive Order N-73-20 directed the California State Library to work with local libraries to promote affordable home Internet services within their communities. This webinar will be part of an ongoing series to help you understand, identify, and provide your patrons with helpful information about options they have to access affordable broadband.
What is it?
The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 appropriated $3.2 billion to the FCC to help low-income households pay for broadband service and connected internet devices in what was originally a temporary program to assist residents during the COVID pandemic. In November 2021, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act added a $14.2 billion dollar investment to focus on long-term affordability issues and created the Affordable Connectivity Program.
Where does my library come in?
Libraries will be key community partners in getting the word out, as well as helping patrons determine if they are eligible, and what documentation they might need to gather, and fielding any basic questions that might crop up as patrons sign up for the program.
What will I learn from this webinar?
Background on the two programs, and why patron awareness is important. You will be provided resources and tips for your library to pass along to patrons who might need assistance signing up for the benefit programs, as well as answers to questions they might ask you when they sign up. The California Emerging Technology Fund will provide a walk-through of the sign-up process.
The presentation will be approximately 45 minutes with an additional 15 minutes for questions.
