CALL for Learning

Are you interested in supporting staff learning in your library? In January 2022, we will launch CALL for Learning.

By participating in this training, you (working with a team from your library) will be able to:

– Assess the organizational learning culture in your library, identifying gaps and opportunities
– Design systems and programs that foster staff development
– Create opportunities for individual learning and for peer sharing/collaboration
– Encourage reflection that supports workplace learning
– Model how-to-learn from experimentation and risk-taking
– Overcome barriers to workplace learning (such as time and motivation)
– Foster learning agility
– Use individual learning plans to set goals and track progress

Team participation – you will apply for participation in teams of 2-5 from your jurisdiction
Blended learning delivery – a combination of live, self-paced and microlearning formats will be used to deliver content
Practical application – you won’t just read and hear about how to build a learning culture in your library, you will practice it!

Starting January 3, 2022 and ending March 31, 2022, you and your team will spend an average of 45 minutes per week on content and activities. There will be two live sessions, with days and times to be determined by participants. The content is being spread over 13 weeks to provide breathing space for busy schedules and time for content application.

What is included in the training?

The 13-week training will move through 5 phases:

  1. Assess: During this phase, participants will develop a shared vision of the learning culture they would like to see in their library. Everyone will also complete an assessment, looking at the current learning culture in their organization, and identifying strengths and opportunities for change and improvement.
  2. Plan: This is focused on making plans for building an effective learning culture. During this phase, participants will explore the use of competencies – looking at a variety of library competency examples. In addition, the plan phase covers motivation as it relates to workplace learning. Another topic in this phase is overcoming time barriers to learning – how do we make the time for learning?
  3. Design: This phase focuses on designing the systems that can foster workplace learning. One of the topics in this phase is “Individual Learning Plans” and how they can be used. Creating an environment that is safe for risk-taking and experimentation (which are so essential for learning) will also be discussed.
  4. Learn: This centers around workplace learning taking place. Characteristics of adult learners will be reviewed. Tips for making learning part of our daily routines will be shared. Evaluation of learning/training will also be covered in the Learn phase.
  5. Transfer: This phase is focused on acting upon the learning we do, including sharing it with others in our organizations. The connection between learning and innovation will be highlighted. Giving recognition for workplace learning will also be part of the transfer phase.

Starting in Phase 2 and continuing throughout Phases 3, 4, and 5, each team will use a template to create a Staff Development Plan that is tailored to the needs and opportunities within their organization.

The training will be delivered using several tools/resources: We have online modules with short videos, a workbook, and a microlearning platform called FLIP. There will be two Zoom sessions, which will bring the teams from different libraries together to talk about these topics and learn together (we’ll poll everyone to see what dates/times work best).

Ready to apply? Put together a team of 2-5 staff members from your library and complete the application. When registering, please click +Add Guest to add additional team members, as this is a cohort-based learning opportunity for 2-5 people per library jurisdiction.
