Gender Identity 101
November 9 @ 11:00 am - 12:15 pm
Transgender issues make headlines all the time, but that doesn’t mean the topics are common knowledge. Most people feel they lack a foundation to have a sensitive and substantive discussion. This workshop offers an overview—with expert, in-depth analysis from one of the community’s leading speakers—of current issues facing the trans community. A Q&A session will follow at the end to encourage discussion. You’ll leave feeling up-to-date on the issues, as well as the vocabulary and etiquette you need to talk about what comes up in the news, while expressing the respect that you intend.
Presented by :: Scott Turner-Schofield
Scott Turner Schofield is regarded as one of the top speakers in the U.S. on the topic of transgender sensitivity and inclusion. Considered one of his generation’s trailblazers in the movement for transgender liberation—openly trans since 2000—Scott has used his lived experience and intersectional analysis to change the nondiscrimination policies of several major universities, coach conservative CEOs at Fortune 500 companies to trans sensitivity in the workplace, and teach youth tools for the self-esteem that living an authentic LGBTQ life requires.
In 2017, he created a groundbreaking training tool for fitness spaces and schools called “Everybody Changes,” which meets tensions around equitable access to changing facilities by transgender and non-binary people with grounded education and practical approaches. It is accessible online and is currently in use by several municipalities, as well as YMCA locations and universities nationwide.
