Library Juice Academy courses are taught asynchronously and involve reading assignments, offline activities, and class participation with a strong emphasis on interaction between the students and the instructors.

LSSC Elective Competencies: Adult Readers’ Advisory Services

Dates: August 2 – September 12

A six week online course on readers’ advisory services, designed to meet the elective requirement for the Library Support Staff Certification program. Topics covered include: introduction RA and the RA interview, advisory services for non print materials, social media and RA, programming, working with teens, diverse reading and populations and introduction to the genres of science fiction, fantasy, romance, crime and nonfiction.

Assessing and Advocating for Early Childhood Services

Dates: August 2 – August 29

In this class, you will learn about the different methods that your library can use to assess program effectiveness, including self-assessments, participant feedback surveys, and evaluations. You will get hands-on practice creating and implementing assessment tools and creating an advocacy plan for early childhood programs.

Cultural Competence for Librarians

Dates: August 2 – August 29

For the library profession, which has historically struggled with developing a workforce that is reflective of the communities being served, these changing times will require cultural competence, defined by the Association of College and Research libraries as “a congruent set of behaviors, attitudes, and policies that enable a person or group to work effectively in cross-cultural situations” (ACRL, 2012). While cultural competence has become a part of some library and information science programs, for librarians currently working in the field, cultural competence may be an enigma. This course will introduce librarians to the concept of cultural competence in the library and information science profession.

Stories, Songs, and Stretches I: Science and Standards

Dates: August 2 – August 29

Become a certified Stories, Songs, and Stretches!® facilitator! This online training utilizes professional videos, recorded lecture, interactive discussions, and group / individual assignments to provide a distance-learning certification option, without sacrificing the quality of the in-person experience. Module I: Take a deep dive into three distinct areas of early learning: physical literacy, early literacy, and social-emotional development. Learn how the brain, body, and heart grow together, and begin to understand how yoga-inspired movement and stillness can enhance this development.
