Sustainable Thinking for the Future of Libraries

Wednesday, July 20 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Register for this one-hour webinar.

Our future depends on all of us working together with empathy, respect, and understanding to adapt to the many challenges facing society.

In this webinar, Rebekkah Smith Aldrich will explore the importance of infusing the new core value of sustainability into everything we do, and demonstrate how libraries that lead into the future using ‘sustainable thinking’ fulfill our mission as libraries in new and innovative ways.

‘Sustainable Thinking’ is a concept that aligns the core values of libraries with the ‘Triple Bottom Line’ definition of sustainability. This consists of practices that are environmentally sound, economically feasible, and socially equitable. Libraries play an important and unique role in promoting community awareness about resilience, climate change, and a sustainable future.

Presenter: Rebekkah Smith Aldrich, MLS, LEED AP, is currently the executive director of the Mid-Hudson Library System in New York. She is the co-founder of the Sustainable Libraries Initiative and co-creator of the award-winning Sustainable Library Certification Program.

Rebekkah currently serves as the chair of the ALA Council Committee on Sustainability and is the sustainability columnist for Library Journal. Author of Sustainable Thinking: Ensuring Your Library’s Future in an Uncertain World; Resilience, part of the ALA Futures Series; and Libraries and Sustainability: Programs and Practices for Community Impact, Rebekkah focuses her professional attention on helping libraries and library workers be successful in the face of disruption and uncertainty.
