PCI Webinars: What are they and how can I use them?

As part of the CALL grant we are reaching out to a variety of learning partners who provide quality content for libraries. One of those partners is the People Connect Institute (PCI). Through PCI, California public library staff now have access to over 50 live webinars each year and anytime access to more than 300 on demand programs from some of the most respected experts in the library field. Now that you know what they are, how can you use them and where can you find them?

Live Webinars

For information on upcoming live PCI Webinars, check the CALL Calendar. Each week you will find a webinar listed – usually on Wednesdays at 9:30 – on relevant topics like Effective Communication During a Conflict, Little Hands Signing in Storytime and Learning to Share Your Sandbox: Developing Effective Partnership Agreements. When you see something you want to attend live, use the “Register to attend live” link in the event description. Be sure you use the link for the webinar you want to attend. Each registration link is specific to an individual webinar and only for California library staff and you can register as far in advance as you want. Once you have registered, you will receive the access information for the webinar. Can’t make the live delivery? Read on…

On-Demand Webinars

As part of our partnership agreement, library staff in California now also have access to over 200 on-demand webinars. You can find these through the On-Demand Webinars landing page. From there, you can get to the CALL Academy with all PCI on-demand webinars. This area will constantly be updating as the recordings from the weekly live webinars are added – usually within a week. Wow! We know it is a lot to take in. So here are a couple of ideas to find what you want.

Searching the On-Demand Webinars

Have no fear – eventually we plan to have categories for all of the on-demand webinars to facilitate searching. However, in the meantime, once you reach the CALL PCI Webinars page, use the very small magnifying glass at the top of the page to search by keyword. To ensure that you get results, use the broadest term you can think of. So rather than “Reader’s Advisory,” just user “Readers” or “Advisory.” When looking for webinars on library safety, try both “library safety” and just “safety” to see what you find. Just want to take a learning break? Browse the webinars for a topic you find interesting and spend an hour (or less) learning something new.

Libraries and Wildfire Preparedness Panel Discussion

October 21 @ 10:00 am 11:00 am

Please join the NorthNet Library System and libraries throughout the state on Wednesday, October 21 for a timely conversation on Libraries and Wildfire Preparedness. As if 2020 wasn’t already such a challenging year, California is in the midst of the worst fire season ever and there are many more weeks to go. How are libraries across the state coping right now and how are they building on their experience from past disasters?

During this panel discussion, presenters will share:

  • Ways to increase disaster resiliency within your network and library system
  • Lessons learned during recent wildfires
  • How to develop disaster plans that “go beyond the binder” and engage the entire library community
  • Tools and resources from LibraryRecovery.org, NorthNet’s new website supporting disaster preparedness, response and recovery

The discussion will be held on Zoom from 10–11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Register today: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/121781883893.
